1954, within the framework of H-XD3431 - Western European Union (WEU), based on Article IX of the modified T-XT4803 - Treaty for Collaboration in Economic, Social and Cultural Matters and for Collective Self-defence (Brussels Treaty). First plenary session in 1955. Original title: WEU Parliamentary Assembly - Interparliamentary European Security and Defence Assembly -- Assemblée parlementaire de l'UEO - Assemblée interparlementaire européenne de sécurité et de défense. Also referred to as European Security and Defence Assembly / Assembly of Western European Union -- Assemblée européenne de sécurité et de défense / Assemblée de l'Union de l'Europe occidentale. Office closed down on dissolution of WEU, 30 Jun 2011.

Examine and support intergovernmental activities at European level in all areas of European security and defence.

Structure

Assembly (twice a year, usually in Paris, France), composed of national representatives. Presidential Committee, comprising Bureau, Secretary-General, Honorary Presidents, Committee Chairmen, representatives of the political groups, Heads of Delegations, Heads of Associate delegations. Bureau, consisting of President and 10 Vice-Presidents. Committees (6): Defence; Political; Technological and Aerospace; Quaestors; Rules of Procedure and Privileges; Parliamentary and Public Relations. President elected annually by members.
