History

Founded by merger of International Secretariats of bakery, brewery and meat workers. Further mergers: in 1958, with H-XH0268 - International Federation of Tobacco Workers, set up in 1886, Brussels (Belgium); in 1961, with H-XH3594 - International Union of Hotel, Restaurant and Bar Workers, formed in May 1908; on 1 Jan 1994, with H-XB1979 - International Federation of Plantation, Agricultural and Allied Workers (IFPAAW), formed Dec 1959, Brussels, itself replacing H-XH4982 - Plantation Workers' International Federation, formed in 1957, and having subsequently merged with H-XH0792 - European Landworkers' Federation (ELF), set up Aug 1920, as International Landworkers' Federation (ILFA) -- Fédération internationale des travailleurs agricoles -- Europäische Landarbeiter Föderation. Current title adopted on merger with IFPAAW. Statutes adopted 29 Jan - 1 Feb 1973, Geneva (Switzerland); amended: 1977, 1981, 1985, 1989, 1993, 2002, 2007.

Aims

Defend the general and specific interests of workers of all countries employed in food and allied industries by: aiding affiliated unions in organization, education and efforts to improve living and working conditions of members; establishing unions in areas where none exists; assisting coordination of policies engaging in common projects. Promote national legislation and international agreements in the interests of members or of the working population as a whole; promote organization of the world's food resources for the common good of all; seek participation of labour and consumer interests at all stages of national and international policy making.
