History

Founded on the amalgamation of H-XH3515 - World Federation for the Protection of Animals (WFPA), set up 31 Aug 1950, Scheveningen (Netherlands), and H-XH7112 - International Society for the Protection of Animals (ISPA), formed in 1959, Washington DC (USA). H-XH1721 - International Council Against Bullfighting (ICAB), created 1958, London, merged with WSPA which is continuing the work of ICAB.

Aims

Promote effective means for protection of animals and relief of suffering worldwide; maintain effective liaison between, and seek cooperation with, local organizations having similar objectives; provide facilities for membership of all approved animal welfare societies and individuals interested in animal welfare; organize international and regional conferences; seek recognition and representation on suitable international bodies; study international and national legislation relating to animal welfare and promote international efforts for protection of animals; provide means of informing members concerning international aspects of animal welfare, including humane education; mount animal rescue operations in the event of man-made or natural disaster.
