Aims

Encourage exchange of experience and ideas among soil scientists in the region; advise agricultural agencies of member countries on efficient conservation, management and utilization of indigenous soil resources for prolific and sustained agricultural production; standardize soil research methods and procedures; review major soil problems affecting agricultural production and recommend appropriate measures to overcome them; liaise with international bodies interested in development of agriculture and transfer of appropriate agricultural planning and management techniques in the region.

Activities

Organizes: seminars, workshops and conferences on major problems affecting soil-use; correlation and coordination of research activities and findings of soil scientists in the sub-regions through various committees; preparation of soil and soil suitability maps of sub-regions; review of existing soil and soil suitability maps; distribution and exchange of scientific documents. Consultancy services: land evaluation; land conservation; management of soils for sustainable development; soil biology; irrigation, agricultural, silvicultural and pastoral practices.
