The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).


May 1982, Nairobi (Kenya), at symposium on 'Environment and the Future' attended by representatives of 21 NGOs. Incorporates activities of Africa Youth Leaders Coordinating Committee for Environmental Education, subsequently 'Africa Youth for Environment (AYE)'. Registered in accordance with Kenyan law. Also referred to as African NGO Environmental Network.


Strengthen communication and cooperation between African NGOs and their governments; build links between African NGOs and those with similar interests in other parts of the world; provide sound leadership among development and environmental NGOs, and facilitate active participation of NGOs in environmental and development projects; identify and provide information on issues of concern to African development and environment; produce educational materials; advise on the design, management and implementation of projects; organize training workshops and seminars on environmental management.
