Founded

1961

History

1961, as International Laboratory of Marine Radioactivity (ILMR), on conclusion of a tripartite agreement between B-XB1383 - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Government of the Principality of Monaco and the Oceanographic Institute of France. Now bipartite between IAEA and the Government of the Principality of Monaco. Subsequently referred to as IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories (IAEA-MEL). Previously also known as IAEA Marine Environment Laboratory. Martine laboratories in Monaco and Terrestrial Laboratory in Seibersdorf (Austria) consolidated under current title.

Aims

Assist IAEA Member States understand, monitor and protect the marine and terrestrial environment from radioactive and non-radioactive pollution; coordinate technical aspects of international ocean protection, training and assistance programmes; use nuclear techniques to assist in answering marine and terrestrial environmental questions.
