Established Dec 1993, on signature of an agreement by Canada, Mexico and USA, to create the North American Free Trade Area, pursuant to Article 2002 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) -- Accord de libre-échange nord-américain (ALENA) -- Tratado de Libre Comercio de Norteamérica (TLC). Had been proposed Jun 1992, the USA already having a bilateral arrangement with Mexico, signed 1987, and with Canada, signed 1988. NAFTA came into force 1 Jan 1994, on ratification by parliaments.
Administer the mechanisms specified under the NAFTA to resolve trade disputes between national industries and/or governments in a timely and impartial manner.
