15 July 1951, Stockholm (Sweden), at 13th International Congress of Psychology, developing from International Organizing Committees of the earliest Congresses, referred to in French as Comité permanent des Congrès internationaux de psychologie, the first International Congress of Psychology having been held in 1889, Paris (France). Statutes most recently modified in 2012.


Enhance and promote the development of the science and profession of psychology; exchange ideas and scientific information between psychologists of different countries; contribute to psychological knowledge through publishing activities; foster the exchange of publications and other forms of communication; foster excellence in standards for education, training, research and the applications of psychology; enable development of psychological scientists and national associations through capacity building activities; foster international exchange, especially among students and young researchers; collaborate with other international, regional and national organizations in matters of mutual interest.

International projects and networks:

 • International Network Project on Psychological Dimensions of Global Change carries out research on 'Perception and Assessment of Global Environmental Change (PAGEC)' under the ICSU and ISSC 'Human Dimensions Programme of Environmental Change', supported by UNESCO;

 • Initiative on Psychology and Cognitive Science, supported by US Academy of Sciences through ICSU, currently emphasizes psychology in a multidisciplinary environment and includes cooperative study with the International Brain Research Organization and the International Geographical Union;

 • 'Dealing with Poverty and Social Integration through Studying Child-Rearing Practices of Low Socioeconomic Status Women', supported by UNESCO through ISSC;

 • International Network of Psychology and the Developing World (INPDW), monitors the role and status of psychology in Third World countries and fosters cooperation and exchange of information among institutions and scholars working in these countries, especially through attendance at congresses and 'Advanced Research Training Seminars (ARTS)';

 • Health Net, previously International Project for Psychology and Health, develops and implements illness prevention and health promotion programmes and specific clinical interventions;

 • International development of ethical codes for psychologists;

 • Cognitive psychology in a multi-disciplinary environment;

 • Behavioural science learning modules for health practitioners;

 • International Network of Human Development and Child Research Centres - jointly with International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development.
