Mar 1995, when Plan was adopted. Technical coordination and secretariat provided through F-XF0820 - South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) with assistance from E-XE4161 - UN Environment through F-XF4234 - Regional Seas Programme. Implemented under the authority of UNEP Executive Director. Also referred to as South Asian Seas Action Plan and SAS Action Plan.
Protect and manage marine environment and related coastal ecosystems in the region by establishing and enhancing consultations and technical cooperation among States of the region; emphasize the economic and social importance of marine and coastal resources; establish a regional cooperative network of activities concerning concrete subjects/projects of mutual interest to the whole region.
