Founded on restructuring of the former International Savings Banks Institute (ISBI) -- Institut international des caisses d'épargne (IICE) -- Instituto Internacional de Cajas de Ahorros (IICA) -- Internationales Institut der Sparkassen (IIS), which had been set up in 1925 as International Thrift Institute -- Institut international de l'épargne -- Internationales Institut des Sparwesens -- Istituto Internazionale del Risparmio, pursuant to a resolution adopted by the International Thrift Congress, 26-30 Oct 1924, Milan (Italy). Statutes amended 20 May 1963, Vienna (Austria), with adoption of new name. Statutes further amended: 1969, Rome (Italy); 1972, London (UK); 1974, Geneva (Switzerland); 1975, Bogota; 1982, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); 1994, Prague (Czech Rep); 1996, Tokyo (Japan); 2002, Beijing (China); 2006, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); 2009 Santiago (Chile); 2012, Marrakech (Morocco).
Serve as a centre for exchange of business experience and ideas on all facets of retail banking; promote practical business and development cooperation among members; encourage international organizations to take saving and retail banks specific views into account in defining policies; promote the interests of savings and retail banks worldwide; increase bilateral and multilateral relationships and information exchange with and among savings and retail banks.
