History

Founded June 1994, on restructuring of the former International Savings Banks Institute (ISBI) -- Institut international des caisses d'épargne (IICE) -- Instituto Internacional de Cajas de Ahorros (IICA) -- Internationales Institut der Sparkassen (IIS), which had been set up in 1925 as International Thrift Institute -- Institut international de l'épargne -- Internationales Institut des Sparwesens -- Istituto Internazionale del Risparmio, pursuant to a resolution adopted by the International Thrift Congress, 26-30 Oct 1924, Milan (Italy). Statutes amended 20 May 1963, Vienna (Austria), with adoption of new name. Statutes further amended: 1969, Rome (Italy); 1972, London (UK); 1974, Geneva (Switzerland); 1975, Bogota; 1982, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); 1994, Prague (Czech Rep); 1996, Tokyo (Japan); 2002, Beijing (China); 2006, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); 2009 Santiago (Chile); 2012, Marrakech (Morocco). Registered in accordance with Belgian law.

Aims

Serve as a centre for exchange of business experience and ideas on all facets of retail banking; promote practical business and development cooperation among members; encourage international organizations to take saving and retail banks specific views into account in defining policies; promote the interests of savings and retail banks worldwide; increase bilateral and multilateral relationships and information exchange with and among savings and retail banks.

Monitoring/evaluation; research/documentation; events/meetings; projects/programmes. 'Coordination Committee of the European Savings Banks Group and the World Savings Bank Institute' coordinates activities with those of European Savings and Retail Banking Group (ESBG) at 'Joint Office of the European Savings Banks Group and the World Savings Banks Institute' in Brussels (Belgium), under the headings: Representation of Interests; Business Cooperation; Financial Sector Development. Instrumental in setting up: Forum of Postal Savings Banks.
