History

16 Apr 1996, Islamabad (Pakistan), following the 1st Conference of the Asian Ombudsmen and the office holders of ombudsman like institutions representing 18 countries on the continent, 1996, Pakistan.

Aims

Promote the concepts of Ombudsmanship and encourage its development in Asia; develop professionalism in discharge of the functions as Ombudsman; encourage and support study and research regarding the institution of Ombudsman.

Activities

Provides a platform for Ombudsman and similar institutions of accountability and grievance redress working in the Asian region; sponsors training and educational programmes for Ombudsman institutions in the region; provides scholarships, fellowships, grants and other types of financial support to individuals; collects, stores and disseminates information and research data; facilitates exchange of information and experiences among the Ombudsman of the region; plans, arranges and supervises periodic conferences. RETA Project 6465, approved by the Board of Directors of ADB, 24 June 2008, envisaged an overall grant of US$.9 million to carry out the following components of its work plan: prepare a survey report entitled 'Assessing the Capacity Development Needs of the Asian Ombudsman Association and its Members'; capacity building activities; development of knowledge products; strengthening AOA's online resources centre. The survey report (2009) highlighted best practices in ombudsmanship among AOA members and identified their training needs, and has served as a reference point for RETA's activities. Capacity building activities include study tours, training, secondment and retreats.
