Founded

1972-06-01 Strasbourg France

History

Established 1 Jun 1972, Strasbourg (France), on setting up of European Youth Centre Strasbourg (EYCS), within the framework of D-XD0435 - Council of Europe (CE). Strasbourg centre extended to present capacity, 1978, following decision of 1975. Since 1993, comprises part of the Youth Department, Directorate of Democratic Citizenship and Participation of the Council of Europe. European Youth Centre Budapest (EYCB) inaugurated 1995, Budapest, following enlargement of the Council of Europe to include countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Strasbourg Centre renovated with extended capacity in 2008.

Aims

Supplement training of youth leaders in a European context; provide nongovernmental youth organizations with a meeting place to further international understanding in respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms and for detailed study of European problems; seek to ensure participation by young people in solving problems which concern them; promote research into youth problems through exchange of ideas and experience.

Structure

'Advisory Council on Youth', comprising 20 members of D-XD5676 - European Youth Forum: 13 representatives of international nongovernmental youth organizations (INGYOs), 7 representatives of national youth committees, 5 representatives of national youth councils and 10 representatives of non-governmental youth organizations which are not member of EYF. 'Joint Council on Youth Questions', comprising governmental partners - D-XD0435 - Council of Europe (CE) - European Steering Committee for Youth (CDEJ / CDEJ) - and nongovernmental partners - represented by the Advisory Council on Youth. 'Programming Committee on Youth', comprising 8 members of CDEJ and 8 of the Advisory Council on Youth.
