Aims

Enhance marine science teaching and learning worldwide so as to better equip teachers and planners, and through them the public at large, for the decision-making process concerned with questions related to marine and coastal environments.

Activities

Together with Major Interregional Project on Research and Training with a view to Integrated Management of Coastal Systems (COMAR) and Promotion of Marine Science Programme (PROMAR), comprises UNESCO's coastal and marine science programme and assists in implementation of projects funded by GEF. Global Faculty Network, a computer-based, marine environmental module project provides universities, research institutes, government services, secondary schools and companies with learning materials in marine and coastal remote sensing. Contributes to implementation of Global Action Plan for Environment and Development in the 21st Century (Agenda 21) through modules on application of marine and coastal image data from satellite, airborne and in-situ sensors. Module series on seismic learning tasks. Organizes and cooperates in regional advanced training and environmental education. Set up 'UNESCO Moscow (Russia) State University Research and Training Centre in Marine Geosciences' in connection with Floating University (FU).
