History

3 Oct 1973, Malema, as a customs union between the Governments of Liberia and Sierra Leone, an arrangement in which all the other States in the Western African Sub-Region may participate. Protocols to the Declaration signed 1974, Bo (Liberia).

Aims

Expand trade; encourage productive capacity; progressively develop a common policy and cooperation as regards harmonization of tariffs and regulations related to customs, qualifications and postal services; promote joint development projects; secure a fair distribution of the benefits from economic cooperation.

Activities

Common External Tariff instituted between Liberia and Sierra Leone, Apr 1977; extension to Guinea envisaged. Trade between Liberia and Sierra Leone liberalized 1 May 1981, for specific goods of local origin; Guinea was later incorporated into the trade liberalization scheme. Emphasizes cooperation through practical and feasible measures in areas of trade liberalization and facilitation, industry, agriculture, livestock and transport.
