The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).


1985, for an initial 5-year phase, as successor to 'Deep Sea Drilling Project', commenced 1968 and 'International Phase of Ocean Drilling', begun 1975. Extended until 2003; activities taken over by - Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme, currently International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).


Study geological and tectonic history of ocean basins worldwide, and the planet's palaeoenvironment; use drilling and logging to improve fundamental understanding of the geological history, structure and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere.

Provides sediment and rock samples, shipboard and shore-based facilities for the study of these samples and downhole measurements (eg wireline logging) and opportunities for special experiments to determine in situ conditions beneath the seafloor. Deep drillings of the submarine terrestrial coast to understand the collision process between African and Eurasian continental plates. Program conducted by contractors responsible to the National Science Foundation of the USA. Drilling platform is the 'JOIDES Resolution'.
