The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

Feb 1992, within the framework of the Office of Legal Affairs of United Nations (UN). Has become 'United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS)' -- 'Division des affaires maritimes et du droit de la mer'.

Aims

Provide advice, assistance and information to States on all matters related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea; promote the widespread acceptance of the United Nations convention on the law of the sea, its rational and consistent application and the fullest realization of the benefits accruing to States under it; improve cooperation and coordination of activities within the UN system in order to ensure consistency with the Convention.

Activities

Undertakes a number of advisory services intended to assist States, particularly developing States, in the management of their maritime domain; provides direct assistance in planning and formulating policies and programmes for maritime areas under national jurisdiction; assists States in the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); provides training and technical support to individual States. Maintains a Law of the Sea Reference Collection and Library. Provides Secretariat for the Preparatory Commission of: International Seabed Authority (ISBA); International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
