1960

History

1960, within the framework of E-XE2231 - Allied Command Operations (ACO) of C-XC3005 - NATO. Responsible to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Following 12-month trial period, ongoing in 2000, planned to go from brigade to divisional size headquarters with the title Immediate Reaction Force - Land (IRF-L). Disbanded Oct 2002.

Aims

As NATO's immediate reaction force, act as a conflict prevention and crisis management tool designed to be deployed in response to any threat across the spectrum of conflict; demonstrate the solidarity of the Alliance and its ability and determination to defend itself against aggression.

Structure

A multinational task force of divisional size, comprising about 13,000 men of whom about 6,500 are committed at any one time for full deployment. Force comprises: 10 infantry battalions; 8 artillery batteries; 1 mortar battery; various combat and service support elements; headquarters in Heidelberg (Germany).
