Founded 1 Aug 1907, Stockholm (Sweden), as International Bureau Against Alcoholism – Bureau international contre l'alcoolisme – Oficina Internacional Contra el Alcoholism – Internationales Bureau zur Bekämpfung des Alkoholismus. Previously also referred to as International Temperance Bureau. In 1935, Montreux (Switzerland), the Bureau became secretariat of International Union Against Alcoholism – Union internationale contre l'alcoolisme, sometimes referred to as International Temperance Union. Name changed: 1964, to International Council on Alcohol and Alcoholism – Conseil international sur les problèmes de l'alcool et de l'alcoolisme; 1968, to present name, widening activities to cover all addictions. Previously also referred to in Spanish and German as Consejo Internacional sobre el Problema del Alcoholismo y las Toxicomanias – Internationaler Rat zur Bekämpfung des Alkoholismus und der Suchtgefahren. Current constitution approved 20 Sep 2014. Registered in accordance with Swiss Civil Code.
Prevent the use and reduce the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and of addictive behaviour on individuals, families, communities and society; sensitize, empower and educate organizations and individuals and advocate for effective partnerships in prevention, treatment, research and policy development in the interest of public health and personal and social well-being.
