Aims

Make the highest standards of anaesthesia, pain treatment, trauma management and and resuscitation available to all people worldwide and disseminate these amongst them; assist and encourage formation of national societies of anaesthesiologists; promote education and dissemination of scientific information; encourage research into all aspects of anaesthesiology and the establishment of safety measures, including standardization of equipment.

Activities

Organizes World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (every 4 years); sponsors congresses held by Regional Sections (normally every 4 years, in the intervening 2 years); encourages meetings of special groups and makes provision for them to meet at these congresses as appropriate; recommends desirable standards for the training of anaesthesiologists; provides information on opportunities for postgraduate training and research; advises national and international organizations on request. Special Committees (4): Obstetrics; Paediatric Anaesthesia; Pain Relief; Resuscitation, Trauma and Intensive Care Medicine. Instrumental in setting up: African Federation for the Study of Pain (AFSP); Asian and Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine (AOSRA-PM); Society of Anaesthesiologists of East Africa (SAEA).
