History

June 1991, as a worldwide effort to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

Aims

Promote a worldwide return to breastfeeding, particularly exclusive breastfeeding for the first 4 to 6 months of a baby's life by encouraging women to breastfeed, instituting hospital procedures that enable them to breastfeed and ending the supply of free or low-cost infant formula to maternity institutions.

Activities

Carries out advocacy and awareness-raising actions at all levels, provides information and supports the training necessary to help hospitals and maternity institutions everywhere to achieve baby-friendly status by implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as elaborated by WHO and UNICEF. As of Jan 1998, 13,127 hospitals and maternity institutions in 117 countries had become baby-friendly.
