The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).


Feb 1972, Accra (Ghana), following agreement, 3 Dec 1971, between the United Nations (UN) and the Government of Ghana, but with a juridical personality independent of the contracting parties. Agreement: extended 14 July 1977; superseded by statutes approved by the UN General Assembly, 21 Dec 1982, in Decision 37/444. These statutes recreated the Institute as a sponsored body of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). New agreement regarding the Institute's Accra headquarters signed by UNECA and the Government of Ghana, 21 Sep 1984. Has been referred to as Regional Centre for Demographic Research and Training in Africa -- Centre régional de recherche et de formation démographique en Afrique.


Promote and strengthen research and training in demography and related fields, especially in the English-speaking countries of Africa; provide graduate training in population studies.

Undertakes graduate degrees, in-service training and research facilities to university graduates from English-speaking African countries. Organizes conferences, workshops and seminars on population-related issues.
