History

28 Feb 1949, Brussels (Belgium). Statutes adopted, 16 Nov 1951; amended 1955. New statutes adopted 11 Aug 1956; amended 27 Aug 1970, 5 June 1978, 29 Sep 1989. Most recent statutes adopted 27-28 Apr 1995; amended 4 Oct 2002. An autonomous special group of International Union of Railways (UIC). Registered in accordance with Belgian law.

Aims

Promote and disseminate progress made by medicine to railways; encourage professional contacts between railway medical officers in order to exchange information and knowledge; further medical research specific to the rail mode and put results to practice; guarantee the highest possible level of railway operating safety and the best possible care of railway staff.

Activities

Working Parties deal with the following topics: Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome; vigilance disorders; criteria of fitness for service; ophthalmologic standards; guidelines relating to the consumption of alcohol, drugs and medicines recommendations on the structuring of shift and night shift work; special expert working parties in the areas of cardiology, diabetes mellitus and neurological/psychiatric disorders. Members may submit to the Management Committee problems which, in its opinion, merit scientific research. Organizes Scientific Congress (every 4 years).
