History

20 June 1993, Istanbul (Turkey), by International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies (IFOS). Replaces International Agency for the Promotion of Ear Care (IAPEC), set up Sep 1984, as IFOS Standing Committee for Worldwide Prevention of Hearing Impairment (WOPHIC), from 10 Nov 1987 known as International Agency for the Prevention of Deafness (IAPD), and also known as IFOS International Agency for the Promotion of Ear Care.

Aims

Promote prevention of deafness; seek to mobilize public and political interest with the aim of getting practical resources for the creation of public health audiology and otology facilities; offer active support and cooperation to WHO by implementing a global programme at international, regional and national levels, particularly in developing countries.

Activities

Works with the WHO Regional Offices to set up regional Prevention of Deafness Programmes, to be included in Primary Health Care Programmes; represents medical and social bodies, expert in ear diseases and hearing impairment, offering their cooperation and services to governmental bodies and to WHO; participates in IFOS-sponsored international and regional meetings.
