28 Jul 1998, by resolution 1998/46 of E-XE3377 - ECOSOC, on merger of U-XE1141 - United Nations Committee on Natural Resources and U-XE3021 - United Nations Committee on New and Renewable Sources of Energy and Energy for Development. First session 5-16 Apr 1999; 2nd session 14-25 Aug 2000. Activities taken over by H-XE3104 - United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD).

Committee (sessions every 2 years), comprises 2 sub-groups of 12 government-nominated experts elected by ECOSOC for 4-year terms on the basis of: 6 from Africa; 5 from Asia; 4 from Latin-America and the Caribbean; 3 from Eastern Europea; 6 from Western Europe and other states. One sub-group deals with issues related to energy, the other with issues related to water resources.
