ITER International Fusion Energy Organization (ITER Organization)
Agreement on the Establishment of the ITER International Fusion Energy Organization for the Joint Implementation of the ITER Project (ITER Agreement), signed 21 Nov 2006, Paris (France) and which entered into force 24 Oct 2007, when organization was officially established. Idea launched Nov 1985, Geneva (Switzerland), as a proposal between USSR and USA. Agreement reached between F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) - H-XD0666 - European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), Japan, USSR and USA to jointly pursue conceptual design activities for an international fusion facility. Conceptual design started 1988 with final design approved 2001. China and Korea Rep joined 2003; India joined 2005. Procedure for the decision on the location of ITER Project in Cadarache (France) concluded Jun 2005. ITER is the acronym of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.
Provide for and promote cooperation among Members on the ITER Project, which aims to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy for peaceful purposes, an essential feature of which would be achieving sustained fusion power generation.
