History
Founded 8-9 Jun 1989, Ljubljana (Yugoslavia, currently Slovenia), when statutes were adopted. Statutes supplemented and modified at 10th Conference, 22 Aug 1998, Copenhagen (Denmark). Registered in accordance with Slovenian law. Previously also referred to as Network for Democracy, Human Rights and Protection of Ethnic and Religious Minorities in South Eastern Europe (ISCOMET).
Aims
Conduct research, expert and consultancy work in: political, ethnic, cultural and linguistic aspects of the European integration in general; human rights, especially with regard to protection of minorities and vulnerable social groups which are potentially exposed to discrimination on the basis of ethnic origin or religion and belief; respect of the equality principle in securing the development opportunities of each individual and of vulnerable groups; nationalism, racism, xenophobia, ethnic movements, inter-ethnic relations and protection of minorities; prevention and peaceful solution of inter-ethnic conflicts; questions of migrations and issues related to the ethnic identity of migrants and their social integration; the status of an individual in international law with emphasis on international procedures for protection of human rights and rights of members of ethnic minorities; protection and preservation of cultural heritage of ethnic and religious minorities; the role of religious communities in enhancing of democracy, human rights and religious freedoms, protection of minorities and spreading of reconciliation and cooperation between the nations in South East Europe; the role of the civil society in enhancement of democracy and co-operation of citizens in the processes of decision-making; regionalism and European integration, international regional organisations, territorial cooperation, development opportunities of less favoured countries and regions; common foreign and security policy of the EU and especially the implementation of this policy in relation to the South East Europe and European neighbourhood.
