May 1966, Lima (Peru), on signature of agreement between Government of Peru and B-XB3383 - UNESCO. Became an autonomous international organization, Jun 1971, on signature of multinational agreement by the then 9 member governments. Membership open to all countries interested in South America.
Further seismological activities and research throughout South American region; provide support and promote closer ties between institutions and seismic stations in the region and with international seismological centers; increase capability of member states to cope with seismic events.
