The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

Arrange exchange of ideas among gastroenterologists in neighbouring countries and disseminate knowledge acquired by the various member groups; act as the official representative body for European gastroenterology in all global and political matters.

Organizes: since Feb 1991, annual scientific meeting with UEGF; since 1992, 'United European Gastroenterology Week (UEGW)', in conjunction with UEGF Council; Summer School of Gastroenterology. Up to 1992, organized quadrennial congress with ESGE. Sub-committees currently extending activities into: audit; education; ethics; research; training. Represents member societies and associations within UEGF and OMGE Councils, thus providing an administrative link between these two bodies.
