History

Established by decision of D-XD4238 - Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM), building on the resources of, and replacing, U-XD5563 - Nordic Institute of Regional Policy Research (NordREFO), U-XF5562 - Nordic School of Planning and U-XK0910 - Nordiska Gruppen för Regional Analys (NOGRAN).

Previously came within the remit of Nordic Committee of Senior Officials for Regional Policy (EK-R / NÄRP / NERP).

Aims

Serve as an independent research institute on questions concerning spatial planning and regional development; integrate perspectives of physical planning and regional development with environmental and sustainable development concerns; promote a common perspective of spatial analysis, planning and policy, applying a Nordic and comparative European perspective; establish a professional environment for research and analysis on spatial planning and regional development; complement efforts of national institutes and provide direction and coordination in the field; disseminate results of research and analysis and contribute to professional discussion; assist authorities in Nordic countries with relevant data for policy-making decisions; constitute a meeting place/research environment for Nordic and European policy-makers and researchers.

Structure

Board, appointed by Nordic Council of Ministers, consists of 5 permanent members, one from each of the Nordic countries, 3 observers from Greenland, the Faeroe Islands and the Åland islands, and one representative chosen by personnel. Director, responsible for the institute's economy and management, reports directly to Secretary-General of Nordic Council of Ministers.
