History

Established 1 July 1997, Stockholm (Sweden), by decision of Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM), building on the resources of, and replacing, Nordic Institute of Regional Policy Research (NordREFO), Nordic School of Planning (Nordplan) and Nordic Group for Regional Analysis (NOGRAN). Original full title: Nordregio - Nordic Centre for Spatial Development. Previously came within the remit of Nordic Committee of Senior Officials for Regional Policy (EK-R / NÄRP / NERP).

Aims

Serve as an independent research institute on questions concerning spatial planning and regional development; integrate perspectives of physical planning and regional development with environmental and sustainable development concerns; promote a common perspective of spatial analysis, planning and policy, applying a Nordic and comparative European perspective; establish a professional environment for research and analysis on spatial planning and regional development; complement efforts of national institutes and provide direction and coordination in the field; disseminate results of research and analysis and contribute to professional discussion; assist authorities in Nordic countries with relevant data for policy-making decisions; constitute a meeting place/research environment for Nordic and European policy-makers and researchers.
