History

Founded by Hersch Lauterpacht (1897-1960).

During World War II the centre was transferred from Paris (France) to Switzerland.

Cooperated within U-XJ7351 - World Student Relief (WRS) until its dissolution in 1950.

In the late 1950's the organization recovered and remained centred in Paris until 1968, when the secretariat was moved to London (UK).

Offices moved to Jerusalem (Israel), 1979.

New post-war statutes adopted 1950, and amended: 8 Aug 1958; 14 Aug 1963; Aug 1973; Jan 1977; May 1979; Aug 1982; Jan 1987; Jan 1990; Jan 1993; Jan 1996; Dec 2004.

Aims

As an international, pluralistic, non-partisan umbrella organization, support national independent Jewish student associations worldwide; foster the unity of Jewish students worldwide; strive to ensure their participation in the fulfillment of the aspirations of the Jewish people, its continuity, and the development of its religious, spiritual, cultural and social heritage.

Structure

Congress (annual, in Israel), at which national unions are represented by a number of delegates proportional to their membership. World Executive (meets at least twice a year), consisting of Chairperson, 7 board members and 8 executive union representatives elected by respective local conferences. Constituent executive unions (8): Israel; Europe; Australasia; Southern Africa; UK; France; Chile; Ukraine.
