History

Founded on recommendation of E-XE4168 - ACP-EU Council of Ministers, meeting Jul 1980, Montego Bay (Jamaica). Present Constitution adopted 11 Oct 1996, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain).

Aims

Bearing in mind the new world trade environment, contribute to development and promotion of intra-ACP and ACP-EU trade; motivate and improve ACP and ACP-EU trade flows through more professional management, enhanced decentralized cooperation and regional integration; identify and analyse opportunities offered by the globalization process and liberalization of international trade; raise capacity building of ACP national chambers to the level required for dialogue amongst themselves and with EU chambers; upgrade level of, and foster contacts and flow of information among members; contribute to integration of the informal sector of ACP economies into the formal sector; assist in harmonizing commercial policies of ACP countries; serve as an instrument for promotion of economic activity, market research, human resource development, development of the private sector, of SMEs and of export-oriented investment in ACP countries and regions.

Structure

General Assembly (every 3 years). Bureau, comprising President, 2 Vice-Presidents, Rapporteur and 8 voting members, and including equal representation of 5 regions: Caribbean; Pacific; Southern Africa; Central Africa; East Africa; West Africa. Secretariat in Brussels (Belgium). Responsible for managing the affairs of the Association during the 3 year interval of General Assembly meetings. National Centres (national chambers of commerce, industry or appointed economic operators).
