MASTERCLASSES 2026
Tuesday, 24 March 2026, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM (CET)
- Speaker: Esperanza Duran, Vice-President of the Union of International Associations
- Topic: Navigating Power: How NGOs Shape the Rules of Global Economic Governance
-
For decades, the international system was governed through traditional diplomacy – closed negotiations among States, limited transparency, and minimal participation from non-State actors. But in today’s interconnected world civil society and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have emerged as indispensable actors in influencing global governance with a role which is no longer peripheral, it is structural, strategic, and growing. As economic globalization accelerated, civil society stepped up to insist on accountability, legitimacy, and public interest. NGOs can reframe debates in terms of people, justice and sustainability, which has shifted the direction of major international negotiations. The assets they bring are increasingly valuable: legitimacy, expertise and transnational networks, and their key approaches influence international economic governance. Global problems can not be solved by governments alone, partnership with civil society is needed.
When civil society navigates power strategically, it does not merely influence the rules of the global economy – it helps redesign them in the public interest.
