Founded

2011

History

Founded following a call for action entitled "Call for a finance watch", Jul 2010, by a cross-party group of 22 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in response to the rising requests to meet with representatives of the financial industry and the increasingly technical financial legislation in the wake of the financial crisis that began in 2007. Beginning In Dec 2010, and over the course of 120 meetings with representatives of civil society and other organizations, a set of concrete proposals for the creation of Finance Watch was drawn up. Founding General Assembly took place 30 Jun 2011, Brussels (Belgium), when statutes were adopted and the Board was elected.

Aims

Act as a public interest counterweight to the financial lobby; strengthen the voice of society in the reform of financial regulation by conducting advocacy and representing public interest arguments to lawmakers and citizens.
