The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

1995-10-06

History

6-7 Oct 1995, at inaugural meeting, the Boards together forming one informal nongovernmental body under the auspices of F-XF2152 - European Science Foundation (ESF). Evolved into D-XK1977 - European Marine Board (EMB) and E-XE3932 - European Polar Board (EPB).

Aims

Provide a focus for concerted action on European marine and polar science matters at scientific and policy levels; provide advice on science policy matters; examine research issues of strategic importance, where relevant in close association with the European Commission; facilitate shared use of research resources and implementation of international research networks and projects; promote joint activities in developing new instrumentation and platforms for research and monitoring the marine and polar environment; promote exchange of information between European institutions; foster scientific partnerships with research institutes in countries outside Europe, especially developing countries; interact with relevant international programmes and organizations; promote a common approach to environmental health and safety obligations for marine and polar research; improve public understanding of marine and polar science; create opportunities for young scientists and technologists and enhance mobility of personnel among European institutes.

Structure

Joint Executive Committee of the European Marine and Polar Boards, including Chairperson. Marine Board Executive Committee and Polar Board Executive Committee, each comprising Chairperson and 3 Vice-Chairpersons. U-XK1169 - European Secretariat for Marine and Polar Science (EMaPS) supports the activities of the Boards and aids communication between them and with ESF, the European Commission and other relevant European scientific committees.
