History
Established pursuant to proposal of E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC), following adoption of Regulation (EC) No 2100/94 by E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union, 27 Jul 1994. One of the decentralized agencies set up by the F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) to carry out specialized technical or scientific work on a wide range of subjects.
Aims
Deliver and promote an efficient property rights system that supports creation of new plant varieties for the benefit of society; implement the system of European Union plant variety rights, the sole and exclusive form of intellectual property rights for plant varieties, valid throughout the EU.

Administrative Council, consisting of representatives of each Member State of the European Union and a representative of the European Commission. Office is managed by President (nominated by Council of the European Union), assisted by Vice-President, and consists of 3 separate units (Technical; Administration; Legal), and 4 supporting services (IT; Human Resources; Quality Audit; PR). Board of Appeal, comprising Chairman and alternate, and members chosen by Chairman from a list depending on the cases under consideration. National plant variety offices act as Examination Offices. Reports to: F-XF8309 - European Court of Auditors.
