History
Established on coming into effect of a regulation adopted by E-XE3068 - Council of the European Union, 20 Dec 1993. Activities commenced 1 Sep 1994. Applications accepted from 1 Jan 1996; registration procedure commenced 1 Apr 1996.
A decentralized agency of F-XF2147 - European Union (EU) within the framework of T-XT9113 - Treaty on European Union (Maastricht Treaty).
The European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights (formerly European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy) was transferred to the Office according to the Regulation (EU) No 386/2012 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 April 2012, which came into force on 5 Jun 2012.
Aims
Register Community trademarks and designs, providing a uniform protection throughout the European Union through filing of a single application; develop a comprehensive European Trade Mark and Design Network; protect and enforce intellectual property rights; help combat the threat of IP infringements that jeopardize the EU position as a world leader in the areas of creativity and innovation and the health and safety of EU consumers.
