History

1990, Brussels (Belgium), by Decision 90/55/EEC of E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC); Decision amended 8 Feb 1994, by Decision 94/146/EC, further amended 17 Jan 1995, by decision 95/13/EC. Replaced U-XE4369 - Consumers Consultative Committee which had been set up, 25 Sep 1973, Brussels, by Decision 73/306/EEC of the European Commission, modified in 1976 and 1980, and which ceased to exist 1989 and which itself replaced U-XU0415 - Consumers' Contact Committee in the Common Market, set up 2 Apr 1962 and dissolved 14 Feb 1972. The Consultative Council was also referred to as European Commission Consumers' Consultative Council and as Consumers Consultative Council (CCC). Ceased to exist 1997, on decision of the European Commission, when replaced by the more ad hoc U-XE3239 - Consumers' Committee (CC).

Aims

Advise the European Commission on consumer matters; issue opinions on all aspects of European Community business which may have an impact on the life and wellbeing of the European consumer.

Commission of 48 members, including: 20 representatives of European organizations selected by the European Commission from the organizations' nominations; 22 representatives of national and regional organizations and institutions selected by the European Commission from the organizations' nominations; and 6 experts on defending consumer interests appointed by the European Commission.
