History

3 Feb 1997, Harare (Zimbabwe), on signature of an agreement by the governments of 12 Southern African countries. Integrated into F-XF2522 - Southern African Development Community (SADC), 2017.

Aims

Promote, strengthen and perpetuate cooperation and foster joint strategies for managing cross-border and related crimes with regional implications; prepare and disseminate information on criminal activity in order to combat crime in the region; carry out regular reviews of joint crime management strategies in view of changing national and regional needs and priorities; ensure efficient operation and management of criminal records and effective joint monitoring of cross-border crime, taking advantage of facilities available through Interpol; make recommendations to governments of member countries; formulate systematic regional police training policies and strategies.

Structure

Council of Ministers. Council of Police Chiefs (CPC), meets annually and comprises all members or their delegates. Permanent Coordinating Committee, consisting of Heads of Criminal Investigation Services of member police services/forces. Sub-committees and Task Units. Permanent Administrative and Technical Body based at Sub-Regional Bureau for Southern Africa of B-XB1775 - International Criminal Police Organization - INTERPOL (ICPO-INTERPOL), Harare (Zimbabwe).
