History

1964, as Australian Catholic Relief (ACR), the development and overseas aid agency of the Catholic Church in Australia.

Aims

As a Catholic agency, work for overseas aid and development in impoverished communities throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific and with indigenous communities within Australia.

Activities

Provides emergency food supply, clothing, housing and medical attention; offers vocational training in mechanics, electronics, hairdressing, secretarial skills and English; trains Caritas trainees; supports poor communities to develop skills in tackling poor health and hygiene, poverty, illiteracy and environmental degradation; works on community answers to domestic violence, lack of access to education, poor community facilities, inadequate political representation and lack of income for families; raises awareness of the reality and causes of poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice through education and advocacy programmes in schools, universities, parishes and community groups; annual 'Australian Catholic Relief and Project Compassion' annual Lenten campaign.
