History
1978, as Committee on Disarmament -- Comité du désarmement, resulting from 1st Special Session on Disarmament (SSOD I ), of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) General Assembly. Succeeded other Geneva-based negotiating fora, including: Ten-Nation Committee on Disarmament (1960); Eighteen Nations Committee on Disarmament (1961-1968); Conference of the Committee on Disarmament (1969-1978). Started working under current title, 1984. Originally constituted with 40 members; membership gradually expended (and reduced) to 65 countries. Based at E-XE3343 - United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG).
Aims
Act as the single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum of the international community.

Conference, meeting annually for 24 weeks. Rotating Presidency among Member States (based on English alphabetical order). Conference conducts work by consensus. Plenary meetings open to public; meeting of ad hoc subsidiary bodies closed, with non-member states participating as observers by invitation.
