1974, as a specialized agency of D-XD0140 - Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU). Latest statutes adopted 8 May 1987.

Aims

Promote closer relations among teachers and teachers' organizations of the different countries; defend material and moral interests of teachers and the teaching profession; foster improvement of curricula and teaching methods, educational organization and the academic and professional training of teachers so as to equip them to better serve interest in innovation and research applicable in solving human problems; focus attention on the problem of increasing illiteracy in Africa; promote cultural, technological and scientific advancement by encouraging provision of adequate training in those fields and collaboration with other bodies interested in them; foster a conception of education directed towards international understanding and good will, with a view to safe-guarding peace and freedom and respect for human dignity.

Structure

Assembly of Delegates (every 4 years) comprises 3-15 delegates per member organization, depending on numbers of teachers represented, together with observers from national and international organizations and individuals, elects Officers - President, Vice-Presidents (3), Treasurer - and 6 other members of the executive; these, together with Immediate Past-President, comprise the Executive Committee (meets at least annually). The Executive Committee must include at least 1 (but not more than 4) members from each of the 6 zones of Africa: North, North West, West, East, Central, Southern; and, together with a representative from each national organization, and (ex officio) Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General, comprises the General Council (meets at least every 2 years).
