Current title adopted when integrated as a specialized agency within F-XF5516 - Communauté économique des pays des Grands Lacs (CEPGL), Dec 1979, Lubumbashi (Zaire), at 3rd Conference of Heads of State. Headquarters in Bujumbura (Burundi).
Promote cooperation among members in the energy sector by ensuring development of local energy resources and rational use of available energy; maintain and coordinate members' activities in areas which can benefit from a common approach in the field, such as hydroelectricity, hydrocarbon, methane gas, electric network interconnections, fuel wood, new and renewable energy, rational use in industry, crafts and services.
