The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

20 Aug 1974, as Association sans but lucratif pour l'étude de l'électrification de la région des Grands Lacs. Current title adopted when integrated as a specialized agency within Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries (CEPGL), Dec 1979, Lubumbashi (Zaire), at 3rd Conference of Heads of State. Headquarters in Bujumbura (Burundi).

Aims

Promote cooperation among members in the energy sector by ensuring development of local energy resources and rational use of available energy; maintain and coordinate members' activities in areas which can benefit from a common approach in the field, such as hydroelectricity, hydrocarbon, methane gas, electric network interconnections, fuel wood, new and renewable energy, rational use in industry, crafts and services.

Specific activities: (i) planning for efficient and rational use of energy at lower cost and respecting the environment; (ii) studies on the feasibility and possible performance of already identified communal interest projects; (iii) improvement of human resource capacities in the energy sector.
