Founded 26 Oct 1998, New York NY (USA), when Board was elected, following proposal of Dr Postel on behalf of a broad coalition of internet stakeholders. Set up in response to a request by USA that a non-profit organization should take on responsibility of G-XN4866 - Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for the Internet Domain Name System (DNS) coordination.
Preserve the operational stability of the Internet; promote competition; achieve broad representation of global Internet communities; develop policy appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.
