1907, Copenhagen (Denmark), as Nordic Cooperation Organization. Present name adopted 1972. Previously also referred to as Northern Council of the Deaf.
Promote sign language as the first language of the deaf and acceptance of sign language by the community; promote cooperative action for the deaf in Nordic countries; work to provide the deaf with the same rights, living conditions and opportunities as other citizens in Scandinavia; maintain contact with authorities and Nordic organizations; act as a channel towards international organizations; intensify efforts to support and develop deaf movements in developing countries.
