History

Founded based on Joint Decision adopted by members of Supreme Councils of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Vilnius (Lithuania), 1 Dec 1990. Agreement on Parliamentary and Intergovernmental Cooperation of the Baltic States signed in Tallinn (Estonia), 13 June 1994, specifying responsibilities of the Baltic Assembly and those of the D-XD5517 - Baltic Council of Ministers (BCM), as well as the cooperation format between the BA and F-XF2714 - Baltic Council. Statutes most recently adopted 10 Nov 2017, Riga (Latvia).

Aims

Coordinate cooperation between the national parliaments of the Baltic states; discuss issues and various projects which are of mutual interest to the members of the national delegations and the member states; adopt decisions in compliance with the principles of equality, mutual benefit and unanimity; and develop cooperation with other regional, international, and inter-parliamentary organisations.

Structure

Sessions (annual). Baltic Assembly, composed of 12 to 16 parliamentarians appointed by parliament of each of the Baltic States. Presidium, composed of Chairperson of each national delegation and a deputy appointed by the parliament of the respective state. Committees of the Baltic Assembly (6): Economics, Energy and Innovation; Education, Science and Culture; Health, Welfare and Family; Natural Resources and Environment; Security and Defence; Budget and Audit. Secretariat.
