1970
History
1970, when incorporated in USA as Foundation for Cultural and Intellectual Exchange between Southeast Asia and the West (Obor), arising from an international book sharing network developed in the 1960s by Ivan Kats in cooperation with Indonesian intellectual Mochtar Lubis and modelled on 'Yayasan Obor Indonesia (YOI)', Jakarta (Indonesia).
Aims
Stimulate the international flow of important ideas by encouraging translation, publication and distribution of books in languages in which they might otherwise not appear; help people in developing countries publish and distribute books in their own language, whether written in their own or other languages; support establishment and growth of small, independent book publishing organizations in countries where good books are wanted but where they are unable to succeed commercially without outside assistance; promote sustainable, self-sufficient, non-profit publishers of books that foster discussion and engage people to improve the human condition.
