1971

History

1971, under the auspices of United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), now E-XE4177 - United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Registered as a limited company in Singapore.

Aims

Further the development of iron and steel industries; encourage regional cooperation between governments, industries and organizations and supporting member countries; provide a forum for exchange of knowledge and discussion; provide advisory services and promote the scientific, technological and economic aspects of iron and steel industry development in member countries; encourage establishment and extension of training programmes; promote standardization and utilization of steel products; collect, collate and publish appropriate statistics; disseminate the results of its activities by publication and other means.

Structure

Board of Directors (governing body), comprising 10 country members, one from each regular member country and supporting member country. Regular Member Countries: Indonesia; Malaysia; Philippines; Thailand; Singapore; Vietnam. Supporting Member Countries: Australia; Japan; Korea Rep; Taiwan. Each Regular Member Country and Supporting Member Country represented by a National Committee. Independent Committees (4): National; Technical; Environmental and Safety; Statistical. Technical Committee advises Board on technical matters. Secretariat located in Malaysia since 1992.
