History

8 May 1967, Paris (France), as International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry (IAGC) -- Association internationale de géochimie et de cosmochimie (AIGC), at 1st Council meeting during 1st international symposium, following cooperation commencing with 21st International Geological Congress (IGC), 1960, Copenhagen (Denmark), and culminating in a meeting Nov 1965, Paris, when statutes were completed, temporary officers nominated and affiliation requested with International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). Previous work carried out through Commission on the Abundance of Elements, subsequently Commission on Geochemistry, of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Current title adopted, 2004. Statutes last amended 2005.

Aims

Foster cooperation in, and the advancement of, geochemistry in its broadest sense.

Working groups (8): Applied Isotope Geochemistry; Geochemical Training in Developing Countries; Geochemistry of the Earth Surface; Geochemistry of Health and Disease; Global Geochemical Mapping; Thermodynamics of Natural Processes; Water-Rock Interaction; Urban Geochemistry. Organizes symposia and conference series, many by working groups (about 2 such meetings a year); co-sponsors meetings in related topics.
