History

Founded at 3rd World Psychiatric Congress. Replaced H-XH1752 - International Society for the Organization of World Psychiatric Congresses, set up 18 Sep 1950, Paris (France), which had organized the first two World Congresses - 1950, Paris and 1957, Zurich (Switzerland).

Aims

Advance psychiatric and mental health education, research, clinical care and public policy worldwide; increase knowledge and skills necessary for work in the field of mental health and care for the mentally ill; promote the prevention of mental disorders; improve care of the mentally ill and preserve their rights; promote non-discrimination (parity) in the provision of care of the mentally ill; promote the highest ethical standards in psychiatric care, teaching and research; protect the rights of psychiatrists; disseminate and exchange information and advance enquiry into the aetiology, pathology and treatment of mental diseases; strengthen relations among psychiatrists working in various fields and among psychiatric societies existing in different countries; promote working relations with WHO in the fields of classification, treatment guidelines and psychiatric education, with other United Nations organizations and with governmental bodies.
