The UIA is a leading provider of information about international non-profit organizations. The aim of the Open Yearbook is to promote the activities of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).

History

1971, on signature of series of agreements between New Zealand, Australia, UK, Singapore (Singapore) and Malaysia. Developed from 'Anglo-Malayan defence agreement', signed Aug 1957, since Nov 1959 Five-Power Defence Agreement (FPDA).

Aims

Function as a multilateral security organization in Southeast Asia; build up trust among members and enhance security cooperation; consult in the event of any form of armed attack against Malaysia or Singapore (Singapore); provide assistance in the training and development of the armed forces of Singapore and Malaysia.

Activities

Forces of member countries undertake joint manoeuvres although, for economic reasons, Malaysia withdrew from the 1998 exercise programme.
